Origin Story
GUSS began as a University of Glasgow Computing Science undergraduate final year project by Omar Tufayl, supervised by Tim Storer and advised by Jill Dykes. An extensive study was made of software engineering research literature related to evaluating and bridging the gap between academic learning for software engineers and real-world requirements of industry.
An opportunity to augment students learning and experience of designing, building, deploying and maintaining software systems through real-world projects was implemented with the first few projects for GUSS being managed and successfully delivered by Omar and teams of student software engineers. GUSS has gone from strength to strength ever since and continues to provide students with much needed hands-on skills before entering the world of work, having already successfully navigated many of the complexities of delivering software.

Who are GUSS
GUSS is led and managed by a multidisciplinary team within the School of Computing Science.
Core Team

Tim Storer
I’m a Senior Lecturer in Software Engineering at the School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, where I lead the Software Engineering Lab. I’m fascinated by the messy details of the real-world practice of software engineering, studying how teams and practitioners build, operate and maintain code bases. I’m also Deputy Director of the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance, the research pooling body representing Scottish Computer Science in Higher Education.
Len Lukowski
I joined GUSS as a developer in 2021 and am now Software Engineering Manager. I support our students and project managers in delivering professional project work for our customers. I love the learning opportunities that working here affords our student developers, in terms of the technologies we work with and navigating the complexities customer communication. Our clients represent a range of industries, so I enjoy the fact that this informs our developers of wider opportunities available to them on graduation.
Tess Vaughan
I joined GUSS in 2021, having previously worked in support roles at Imperial College, the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the NHS. I love working with a friendly, supportive core team and the learning opportunities GUSS has given me. I enjoy hearing from students about the positive experiences they’ve had while working at GUSS, as well as learning about the diverse range of projects and initiatives GUSS supports.

UX Designers

Alex Pallis
As a GUSS UX designer, I plan, create and refine a range of digital products including apps and websites. I work closely with clients to ensure our projects meet their standards and requirements, at every stage of the design process. The best part of my role is watching initial ideas and designs come to life, as functional and intuitive digital products.
